South Korean President Yoon Seo-yeol visits Japan today for summit meeting First visit to Japan by a South Korean president in about four years
South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol will visit Japan today for a summit meeting with Prime Minister Kishida. President Yoon visits Japan for the first time in about four years as a Korean president.
His visit to Japan came about last week after the South Korean government announced a solution to the issue of forced labor.
Before leaving, he expressed his enthusiasm for "returning the relationship between the two countries to the good times of the past." In the afternoon's summit meeting with Prime Minister Kishida, he exchanged opinions on cooperation in areas such as security, and the leaders went back and forth. The revival of “shuttle diplomacy” is also expected to be confirmed.
Although preparations for the announcement of the joint declaration have not been completed, Prime Minister Kishida hopes to make use of President Yoon's visit to Japan to strengthen relations between the two countries. It is scheduled to open again.
On the other hand, in South Korea, there is a deep-seated opposition to the solution, saying that it is "too much concession," and attention will be paid to whether the message from the Japanese side will resonate with South Korean public opinion.
